Book Review time! I just finished the book IT from Craig Groeschel. The premise of the book is how churches and leaders can get IT and keep IT. So I pose the question - Do you or your church have IT? This has easily been one of the greatest books I've read on practical ministry and how to keep and maintain the coveted IT that we see in so many ministries and desire in our own. This book will quickly change your view of ministry from a 'church building' mindset to a 'kingdom building' mindset and rushes in a paradigm shift in terms of thinking about ministry and life. Needless to say it was incredibly convicting and gut-wrenchingly honest. Get it now!
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
- "The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of. Our attention would have been on God." - C.S. Lewis
- "The only thing constant is change, which IT-soaked people seem to thrive on. When a church doesn't have IT, few people even notice that no one new is showing up."
- It is a rare combination of these qualities found in his people:
- Passion for his presence
- A deep craving to reach the lost
- Sincere Integrity
- Spirit-filled Faith
- Down-to-earth humility
- Brokenness
-"Worse than being blind would be to be able to see but not have any vision" - Helen Keller
- "Without a vision, people become comfortable with the status quo. Later they grow to love the status quo. Eventually, they'll give their best to protect what IS, never dreaming about what could or should be"
- Vision: "The vision should capture attention, stir hearts and be irresistibly moving. It should cause agitation, ambition, ignition, even competition."
"You can never underestimate the amount of energy and frequency you must give to vision casting. You can never underestimate it." - Bill Hybels
- "To have IT, you'll have to choose not to do everything. Those who attempt to do everything always lose it."
- "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it."
- "Good things are not necessarily God things."
- "To be independent is to be distinctly non-Christian...God designed you to be interdependent"
- "Teams with great camaraderie get relationally naked. They take seriously the it in nudity.
- "Innovation is not absolutely necessary, but then neither is survival." - Andrew Papageorge
- "The goal isn't innovation. The goal is effectiveness. We strive for innovation because we want to be effective."
- "Failure is the tuition you pay for success."
- "Without-it ministries can be filled with very sincere Bible-believing Christians; unfortunately, they're simply more concerned about themselves than the lost."
- "When have we forgotten that the church doesn't exist for us? We are the church and we exist for the world." - Erwin McManus
